COY Marks Another Successful Year

This year’s Celebration of Youth, presented by Emerson and sponsored by Centene Charitable Foundation, was another great success, raising more than $490,000 in support of Youth In Need’s programs! More than 550 guests turned out to celebrate Emerson, our first-ever corporate honoree, and Board member Jon Lottes and his wife, Cara.

Few companies take their social responsibility as seriously as Emerson—particularly here in St. Louis. It’s why Emerson was Youth In Need’s first-ever corporate honoree at Celebration of Youth. Emerson has been not only a generous supporter of Youth In Need’s mission for decades but also a stalwart of civic participation for so many nonprofits.

Rarely do you find supporters who are woven into the very fabric of an organization’s mission like Jon and Cara Lottes are with Youth In Need. “Making a difference” is more than a phrase for this couple. It’s ingrained in who they are and how they connect with others in their community.

Pat’s Chat: #Love

“The first five years have so much to do with how the next 80 turn out.” —Bill Gates

Did you know that 90 percent of the brain develops in the first five years of life? That’s why high quality early childhood education is so important, and that’s why Youth In Need invests so much in the Head Start program. At any given time, we are serving about 1,300 infants, toddlers and preschoolers, through our own centers, home-based programs and community partner centers. For this year’s Celebration of Youth gala, we featured some of our youngest clients in a short video, which I’m happy to share here.

Many thanks to Danny and Dakota Hommes for creating the video, to the staff who patiently hosted them at their sites on multiple occasions (not disruptive at all, right?), to the adorable kiddos who faces light up our lives, and to the YIN staff who shared their words and voices in the video: Loren Babb, Sharday Cage, Erica Cameron, Scott Ramirez, Monique Ruiz and Christine Zabierowski.

YIN-Fest Celebrates Staff, Recognizes Employee of the Year

YIN-Fest, Youth In Need’s annual staff appreciation event, is a chance for staff from all of our locations to celebrate and connect in one place. (A huge thanks to the amazing Human Resources Department who spends countless hours organizing, planning and executing a stellar event to make staff feel appreciated!) Despite flooding that caused a last minute location change to the Machinists Hall in Bridgeton, hundreds of staff gathered to relax, dance, eat, visit, play and celebrate all that it means to be a YINner. Among the celebrations were the annual service anniversary awards, the T-shirt competition—congratulations to the St. Louis City Head Start team—and the much-anticipated Employee of the Year Award.

The Board of Regents selected Mary Arnold, HR Director, from a record number of nominees to be this year’s Employee of the Year! Eleven colleagues nominated Mary, saying she is someone whose door is always open and who always shows she cares. Nominators describe Mary as thoughtful, focused, funny, unselfish, brave, kind and patient. They say she goes above and beyond to make sure people are safe; has a natural spirit to make everyone feel like they belong; listens with an open mind and a big heart; and helps her colleagues succeed through some of their toughest times.

Congratulations to Mary Arnold, HR Director, who is this year's Employee of the Year! Youth In Need's Board of Regents select the Employee of the Year from a pool of staff nominated by their colleagues.
