Thanks for Supporting Golfing for Youth

Thanks to everyone who supported the 22nd annual Centene Charitable Foundation Golfing for Youth Benefit Tournament on Aug. 5. Whether you were a golfer, sponsor, donor or volunteer, we couldn’t have done it without you!

More than 300 golfers turned out at Whitmoor Country Club and Missouri Bluffs Golf Club to tee off for the thousands of children, teens and families Youth In Need will serve this year. While the numbers aren’t final, preliminary totals show the tournament raised more than $150,000! Thank you for helping make it happen!

Pat’s Chat: Planting Seeds of Hope…

The amazing staff at Youth In Need work incredibly hard, day in and day out, to help children, youth and families find safety and hope, and build a positive future. While we see success in the steps our clients are taking, we are with them for only a portion of their life’s journey so we often do not see the full impact. Last week, one of our wonderful Foster Care Case Managers, Candice Doze, shared this story from someone looking back on how Youth In Need changed her son’s life:

“Just wanted to let you know that a couple weeks ago I was getting gas for the company car when a woman got my attention as she was getting gas as well. She asked how long I worked for YIN and said that her son would always call YIN whenever he needed assistance. She said if it wasn’t for YIN her son would be in a really bad situation at this point in his life and would have went down a different path. Her son wasn’t in foster care, but I assume maybe street outreach assisted the family during the time when her son was in need. It also could have been a variety of services. Just wanted to let you know that there are people who are truly thankful for YIN and grateful for what we do to serve in our community throughout St. Louis and St. Charles area.”

To quote Transitional Living Program Case Manager Jordan Eilerman’s poem, Static, “the difference is immeasurable.” Check out this video of Jordan performing this amazing spoken word piece, inspired by her work at Youth In Need.

Bridgeton Counseling Office Open for Business

In May, the St. Louis Community Foundation announced the first grant recipients from the Bridgeton Landfill Community Project Fund—and Youth In Need was on the list! Youth In Need’s three-year grant will focus on mental health counseling for children, youth and families in communities near the Bridgeton Landfill.

Youth In Need’s newest counseling office is located in Arlington Methodist Church at 3770 McKelvey Road in Bridgeton. Staff will provide no cost professional mental health counseling to families and individuals up to 24 years old. Services are available two evenings per week. To learn more, email bridgeton@youthinneed.org.

Just over $3,000,000 was awarded to area nonprofits with projects or initiatives dedicated to the betterment of the environment, health, safety and the welfare of the people in the communities near the Bridgeton Landfill. After nearly a year long informational and research gathering process, organizations were selected by a grant advisory committee that was composed of members of the St. Louis Community Foundation Board, residents and representatives of businesses from the impacted area, and members of the philanthropic community. After several public community meetings, the St. Louis Community Foundation identified four areas that would receive priority funding: Access to health care, behavioral and mental health, public safety and community greening.

This first cycle of funding was earmarked for public safety and mental health initiatives with additional small grants awarded to community-based organizations located in proximity to the Bridgeton Landfill. Youth In Need’s grant is to provide no cost professional mental health counseling to children, youth and families living near the Bridgeton Landfill.
